DARWIN'S THEORY OF EVOLUTION has had very diverse effects on faith. Some Christians rejected it as contrary to the Biblical account. Most Jews did not, because the Bible is considered the word of God but it is not read as a strictly historical account, in human terms. Not only did the rabbis exploit that notion, but even the Psalmist (90:4) says about God, "A thousand years is like a day in your sight." The mind of God was far more vast than could ever be imagined by mere human reckoning. The great 12 Century Jewish philosopher Maimonides said that science and Torah are always in harmony, and if they seem not to be, then either the science or the Torah has been misunderstood! Surprisingly, the 19th Century Theosophist, Madame Blavatsky, who championed the merging of science and religion rejected Darwin's theory of evolution.
